Mail Day #6 – Tomas Kaberle on Black Ice!

Well, Score has been out now for, what, about six months? I had no trouble (as was to be expected) setting aside a base and a glossy parallel from my own case breaks back at launch, and even procured a gold parallel relatively quick via eBay. I was starting to wonder, though, if I was ever going to see the Black Ice parallel. These were only seeded one per case (as per Panini’s notes, anyway), and I only managed one in my two cases, so I think they’re a tad rarer than you may expect.

Fast forward all the way to March 7th and I managed to find one at auction…which I won quite handily for under $10 delivered ($8.00 total in fact)!

Now I just have to get my act together and get my 2011/12 section of my Tomas Kaberle collection updated!

Mail Day #4 – Leaf Lovin’

Well, despite the poor performance over the last week and a bit from my Leafs, I had to show off the two mailers that showed up today…one is for the Keith Aulie collection, while the other was just a “random Leaf” pickup in an easy trade over on Hobby Insider. On to the show…

First up is my very first Aulie printing plate…and from the top-tier Panini release of 2010/11 no less. Panini does up their plates much differently than Upper Deck, for sure…they mount the plate to a “patch-thickness” card that actually has the back of the actual card on the reverse…take a look:

Then, as I said, in a random trade, I picked up this Joe Colborne addition from this year’s Crown Royale. I typically don’t go outside my own PC guys, so this is very odd for me, but the /75 print run and the autograph in red ink made me do it! Not sure if the red is unique or not, as I haven’t had time to really look around, but who cares? I like it!

Mail Day #3…Keith Aulie

Well, I’m multi-tasking here at home today…had to go for a follow-up x-ray on my ankle (broke it playing hockey back on January 6th)…the good news there is, I can start walking again…even without the air cast a bit…will be nice to not have to rely on crutches 24/7 now! With that done, I’m also working from home today instead of wasting time driving to the office. I’m also trying to list some of the 1,200+ cards I just received yesterday to get some of that out of the way!

For now, though, let’s focus on another of my player collections – this time, back to hockey…another Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman that has a lot of promise (despite that last game against the Canucks and being re-assigned to the Marlies). He’s big, strong and (usually) smart with the puck. It will be interesting to see where he fits in with the excess defence that the Leafs have right now…who knows, this could be a short-lived collection for me LOL.

I figured I would start off with a “rainbow” of sorts from last season – Aulie’s Rookie year – and make it one of my favourite sets despite it being a low-end release every year. Of course, it’s the old staple – O-Pee-Chee. I don’t know why, but I love OPC every year. It’s a fun set for the boys and I to put together, and there’s enough inserts and parallels to make it interesting, without going overboard (a la Artifacts). The retro design seems to get a different look each year, after being introduced in the 08/09 release (featuring the famous 79/80 design), and is a popular set for many collectors to put together. On top of that, we now have foil “Rainbow” parallels and serial numbered “Black-Bordered Rainbow” parallels (#’d /100) to chase down, making some even tougher sets to build if one is so inclined.

Here are my 2010/11 O-Pee-Chee Keith Aulie Rookie Cards for your viewing pleasure. Since Aulie was later in the season to debut, his OPC RC’s were actually part of an “update” set that came randomly inserted in 2011/12 OPC boxes…

Mail Day #2 – Tomas Kaberle Stanley Cup Tribute

Looking through the recent Kaberle mail that’s come in, I was trying to decide what to feature today…then it came to me. Why not celebrate the fact that my favourite player finally has his name on the Lord Stanley’s Cup (even if he didn’t win it on my team)!

Just a couple cards to show…the first one is the Day With The Cup insert from Upper Deck Series 1…I was surprised at how “all-over” the pricing was on this one…I didn’t bust any Series 1 this year, so not sure how the odds were at pulling one of these inserts, but I just couldn’t see paying $50-$80 for a “regular-looking” insert! I ended up getting this one in a great trade with Hobby Insider member richkulach.

The next one is my favourite from an “aesthetics” point of view, for sure…I have a soft spot for acetate cards…not sure why – I just love it when an insert is clear LOL. This one was definitely easier to get at a decent price…ended up with this one for $16.76 delivered off of eBay, so was quite happy.

Thanks for dropping by and taking a look…for my next player mail day post I’ll see what I can dig up on Mr. Aulie (despite him having his worst game ever as a Leaf last night against the Canucks).

Mail Day #1…Brett Lawrie Style

Well, I thought that even though this is far from my first mail day, it’s the first one since the start of KKC (yep, I’ve already shortened the blog name in posts LOL). Last year, I really got back into watching the Jays. I’ll be honest, my wife and I had fallen off the band wagon after the lockout. Before that, we were always at games…we had a share in season tickets when you were lucky to get up in the 5th deck nosebleed area, and we were happy to be there (despite some wicked weekend sunburns on my part)! The first game that Brett Lawrie was called up, our household took a real liking to him, and we hadn’t even realized he was Canadian at that point! The heart, the hustle, the desire to be in the big leagues showed through big-time with Brett…the fans love him; he seemed to fit right in with his team-mates and when you look at this stats for his rookie season, well, they aren’t too shabby…

43 Games…150 At-Bats…9 HRs…25 RBIs…and a .293 Average

Hopefully this kid is a Blue Jay for a long time…and the way the management of our team has turned around over the past couple of years, it looks hopeful that we’ll see #13 at third base for years to come.

During the off-season I decided that maybe I’d go after a few Lawrie cards of my own…here is the meager start to that quest…I should probably try to snag a few more before the 2012 season starts, so that I’m not paying premium prices if he continues this season where he left off 2011…enjoy the quick show…if there’s one thing to say about Bowman Chrome cards, they do make for colourful mail days…
